Why a Black Dog Tipi?

Our tipis are individually handmade of natural materials and in the style of traditional north American tipis, but with refinements to best suit the British climate.

They provide spacious living beneath a soaring cathedral-like roof, but also the ultimate comfort of a fire burning in a stone hearth.

Black Dog Tipis offers the opportunity to either buy your own tipi made to your individual requirements, or to rent a tipi for a special occasion.

Handmade with love

Francis only makes Tipis(Teepees) from quality materials. He selects, cuts and strips the poles from renewable Devon woodland.

The woven cotton canvas which originates in India, is treated in the UK to British Standard specification to resist water, rot and fire.

He sews the canvas in his Devon workshop, to a design that he has evolved with experience, using quality poly/cotton thread.

All this takes place under the watchful eye of Alf, the black dog.

How a Black Dog Tipi is made

Francis only makes Tipis from quality materials.

Canvas

We use heavy duty Fire, Water and Rot proofed 12oz Cotton Duck canvas. Most commonly the canvas is white for a light interior, however many customers choose a coloured lacing panel and/or door to personalise their tipi. All seams are double stiched and key areas are reinforced to extend longevity. The tiedowns are made from quality nylon webbing.

Poles

The pine poles are sourced from sustainable local woodland in Devon then stripped, sanded and treated with linseed oil. He selects, cuts and strips the poles from renewable Devon woodland.

Rain Protection

Raincatchers fit inside the Tipi and gather any drips that run down the poles, and then channel them back out through the smoke flaps. Raincatchers are little more demanding to fit but do allow the use of full length tipi poles which many people find more attractive.

To ensure that the Tipi is completely weather proof, either a raincatcher or rainhood is recommended.

Optional Extras

Liner

The Standard liners are 5ft high canvas and include a 12 inch PVC apron to seal to the ground. Linings come complete with pegs and lacing cord. A shorter, 3ft liner is also available.

Rain Protection

We offer both rainhoods and raincatchers, please contact us to discuss the most suitable for your requirements.

Trivet

Welded Trivets made from Horse shoes can also be supplied, prices range from £30 to £55

Flooring

A range of waterproof floors together with Traditional woven Coconut matting is available from stock. We also stock cotton and wool Mexican and Indian rugs. Please enquire for prices.
